The symmetrical architecture in diatom shells by Harun Yahya

Diatoms are a major group of algae and are one of the most common types of phytoplantktons. These algae of microscopic dimensions are the fundamental nutrient of many living beings. They have major vital functions from the production of oxygen to the formation of oil, which is a very important source of energy.

Diatoms produce their shells by transforming the silicon dissolved in water into silica which is similar to opal. The glass-like shells coming into existence as a result of this transformation have an enormous variety and a perfect architecture. Pores on diatoms that enable them to take in nutrients and make gas exchange also refine the structure. Consequently the appearance of these living beings becomes masterpieces of math and aesthetics with flawless angles.

We need to keep in mind that diatoms are microscopic beings no bigger than a pinhead in size having no neural system or brain. It is obvious that these shells of extremely aesthetic appearance produced by diatoms could not have come into existence by chance. Furthermore using the same materials diatoms produce perfect shells with the same features but totally different appearance. This flawless architecture and variety in diatoms is only one of the manifestations of Allah’s unique artistry.

“It is He Who created everything on the earth for you...” (Surat al-Baqara, 29)

Conclusion:

The majority of the operations performed by diatoms cannot be performed even under laboratory conditions. It is surely not possible for a single-celled living being consisting of a cell membrane and chloroplast to work as a chemistry laboratory.

We need to keep in mind that this tiny living being is even unaware of the carbon dioxide that exists outside, the oxygen it produces, the importance of carbon for living beings and the D vitamin in fish oil. It only performs the functions assigned to it by the superior attributes with which it is endowed. For this reason it acts under inspiration.

The superior Might Who gives this inspiration to diatoms, creates it and makes it essential for the survival of life on Earth and the One Who creates the Heavens, Earth and everything in between is Allah. This fact is revealed in one verse as follows:

“Our Word to a thing when We desire it is just to say to it ‘Be!’ and it is.” (Surat an-Nahl Suresi, 40)
